Our four-year accounting and finance programme has been designed with an integrated foundation year to allow you to develop key academic skills and build your confidence at the beginning of your degree. You’ll learn core business skills and the key principles of accounting, as well as numerical and technological skills that are vital for analysing data.

The foundation year of this degree is intended to prepare you for your subsequent years of studying accounting and finance, so you’ll enter Year 1 well-equipped to study at undergraduate level.

Our teaching staff have academic and professional experience in public audit, taxation, financial reporting, management accounting and information systems. You will also benefit from visiting industry speakers who are invited to give presentations on contemporary accounting, finance and business-related topics throughout your degree course.

You will share your foundation year with students on other foundation year courses, allowing you to share insights and get a taste of a variety of other business-related disciplines.

Following your foundation year, you will study the same course content and get the same choice of modules as those who study our Accounting and Finance BA (Hons).

Should you decide during your foundation year that you’d like to specialise in a different area of study, there is some flexibility to allow you to do this.

You’ll graduate with a full undergraduate degree with the same title and award as those who studied the traditional three-year course.

Our Computer Science (including foundation year) BSc (Hons) degree will help you specialise in the design and implementation of modern software systems. 

During your foundation year you’ll learn to use a range of tools and development platforms designed to help you understand the role of computer-based systems. You’ll focus on the fundamentals of programming, cyber-attack prevention, computer networking and mathematics. These skills will help you progress through the following three years of the course.

The foundation year on this course is shared with a number of other computing-related foundation degrees, which allows you to study with students who are interested in a variety of different subjects.

Following the foundation year, you’ll study the same modules and course content as those who study our Computer Science BSc (Hons) degree.

Later in the course you’ll learn more practice-based skills including weekly tutorial and workshop exercises. You’ll come to understand software design and programming language so that by the end of the course you’ll be able to confidently develop programmes of your own.

You’ll be supported throughout the course by our tutors who will help you recognise your own strengths and build your academic confidence. Regular feedback will aid you in the transition from your foundation year to the final years of the course.

You’ll graduate with a full undergraduate degree with the same title and award as those who studied the traditional three-year course.

Our Criminology (including foundation year) BSc course is perfect preparation for a career in crime and justice related settings. You’ll not only study criminological theories and learn to research the causes and implications of crime, but you’ll also gain valuable academic skills that will help you progress to managerial roles or postgraduate study.

On this course you’ll receive excellent support to ensure that you settle into university life and achieve good academic outcomes. In your foundation year, your tutor and mentor will help you work on your strengths and weaknesses and prepare for the following three years of undergraduate academic study. During this year, your modules will focus on developing your academic literacy, critical thinking and analytical skills through the production of short texts about subjects in the field of social sciences and current affairs. You’ll also be joined by students studying the foundation year from other disciplines, providing a perfect opportunity to work with others to improve your skills.

We place great emphasis on our teaching quality and your lecturers will take their time to work with you to develop your skills and ensure you reach a good level of understanding of the topics.

During the foundation year you’ll also take a module that is more focused on criminology, so that you can get a view into the topics you’ll be studying and prepare for the following years. If at the end of your foundation year you decide that you’d like to specialise in a different area of study, there will be flexibility to move to a different course in the School of Social Sciences or the School of Social Professions subject to approval.

In the three years that will follow you’ll experience greater flexibility in choosing what you’d like to study and enjoy the opportunity to combine your criminology degree with the study of psychology, policing, sociology or law. Unravel the debates surrounding the causes of crime from the perspectives of both sociology and psychology in this programme taught by expert staff. The combination of criminology and psychology will give you an expertise in theories and approaches from both disciplines, allowing you to critically evaluate the causes and effects of crime and deviant behaviour.

Gain a solid grounding in developmental, social and cognitive psychology, as well as study how the individual develops through infancy, childhood and early adult life, the development of personality, social factors that influence behaviour, and the development of perception and human thought.

You’ll also be introduced to criminological theory, including the assumptions that underlie intervention and control, and to the criminal justice system including the police, judiciary and prisons where you’ll examine the concept of justice and sentencing. You’ll learn the research skills needed to measure and interpret crime, including both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, and through optional modules in your second and third year, you’ll begin to pursue the areas that most interest you. Options are wide-ranging and include terrorism, victimology, serial offenders and forensic psychology.

You’ll kick off your foundation year by working on an array of short studio and workshop projects, which will aid your development of skills and techniques that are common across all our foundation degrees. Later in the year you will then progress to projects that focus more specifically on graphic design.

During these workshops you’ll have the opportunity to explore a wide range of drawing techniques as well as colour, materials, process, collage, exhibiting and more.

This foundation year will allow you be experimental in a wide range of art subjects and will ensure you’re well-equipped to study graphic design at undergraduate level. Towards the end of the year, you’ll work on projects that will boost your confidence and independence as a designer and train you to be self-motivated and innovative. You’ll also attend lectures and seminars that will look at creative practice within historical, contemporary, conceptual and cultural contexts.

There will be plenty of chances for you to present your work to fellow students and tutors, as well as showcase your best projects in an end-of-year summer exhibition. This will allow you to gain feedback and perspectives on your work and will help you develop as a graphic designer.

This law degree with a foundation year is designed to help you enter a career within environments that rely heavily on the knowledge of law, including business, politics, the civil service and the voluntary sector.

Throughout the degree you’ll receive academic and careers support from tutors and academic mentors. There will also be opportunities to attend workshops that focus on improving your interview, essay writing and critical thinking skills.

In your foundation year you’ll focus on developing academic skills within the context of a broad range of current themes and social issues, from an interdisciplinary perspective. You’ll also explore the broad topics of media, crime and race, where your critical thinking, essay writing and research skills will be exercised. In Year 0, you will also study a Law module which will introduce you to the fundamental principles of law, rights and responsibilities within the legal system, and the way our legal system works. On this course you’ll have opportunities to engage in study visits to legal institutions.

In the subsequent three years of your course you’ll engage in a more in-depth academic study of law, gaining much more choice over the subjects and themes you’ll study.

The foundation year on this course is shared with a number of our other foundation year degrees, so in Year 0 you’ll get to study with other students interested in a variety of different specialisms.

Following your foundation year you will continue to study the same subjects on the Law BA degree. If you find that you wish to change your degree specialism at the end of your foundation year, there will be flexibility to do so.
